Father says son had guardian angel in Route 3 wrong-way crash

A father got a call no father wants to receive after a crash in Chelmsford, Massachusetts, during the Wednesday evening commute.Bobby Thorne, an operations manager for Pridestar Trinity EMS, received word that his 20-year-old son, Isaiah Portocarrero, had been involved in a wrong-way collision on Route 3 around 4:30 p.m."Isaiah was just involved in a head-on accident on the highway; a car crossed over the median and hit him head-on," Thorne said. "He said that he's bleeding and all the airbags went off, so I hung up, and I called my boss."Dashcam video from Portocarrero's car shows the scary moment of impact.Portocarrero sustained only minor injuries. Thorne credits the new Acura his son was driving — a car that was picked because of its crash rating.Thorne also said his son had the luck of a guardian angel on his side.Portocarrero always carries his grandmother's angel pin and obit card, as well as his grandfather's bracelet.The bracelet was initially lost in the crash, but Thorne dug through the wreckage and found it still in his son's car.One other person was taken to the hospital following the crash with injuries that are not considered to be life-threatening.Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the crash.It's unclear if any charges will be filed.
