Father sacrifices life to rescue son in kayak mishap at SoCal lake

A father, aged 54, is being praised for rescuing his 7-year-old son in a boating accident at Riverside County, despite tragically losing his own life. The incident occurred at Lake Perris State Recreation Area, where California State Parks officials received reports of distress in the water. The father and son were playing offshore when their kayak overturned. State Park peace officers quickly responded and found the man unconscious and partially submerged. Thankfully, the boy, though distressed, was conscious and holding onto his father in the water. The father bravely kept his son afloat until rescue personnel arrived. Both were rushed to Riverside University Health system by ambulance, where the father was pronounced dead while the son is being evaluated. Authorities note that neither were wearing life jackets, though one was available. Children under 12 are required by California law to wear life jackets on moving recreational vessels. Our thoughts are with the family affected by this tragic event. The Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner's Office is investigating the incident, with California State Parks also looking into the matter.
