Fatal Graham crash suspect appears in court on second-degree murder charge
GRAHAM, N.C. (WGHP) -- A man accused of killing the passenger in his Jeep after a crash in Graham faced a judge for the first time. Taisean Jones, 24, is charged with second-degree murder in connection to a crash on March 28 along South Main Street and Moore Street. Taisean Jones appeared in person and was shackled at both his hands and feet. He also had what appeared to be a white bandage around his head and was unsteady on his feet. He is still recovering from injuries suffered in the crash. The courtroom was full, with both the defendant and the victim's family filling the seats. During Jones’ first appearance, the officer involved in the case was in court, presenting details from the investigation. Police believe Jones was impaired by drugs and alcohol at the time of the crash. The officer also mentioned that Jones was accelerating into the intersection. Police say Jones failed to stop at a red light, slammed his Jeep into a Mustang, causing the Jeep to flip. Prosecution argued to continue to hold Jones at no bond due to his danger to the community. They mentioned his prior charges, including driving recklessly, speeding and driving under the influence. They added that the victim’s family was in the courtroom, and about five relatives stood up in support of the victim: 29-year-old Imani Vaughn. The defense argued that Jones had no intent to hurt the victim. The defense described her as his close friend and called the crash a result of poor driving rather than intent. The defense also emphasized Jones’ strong ties to the community and asked for friends and family in the courtroom in support of Jones to stand up. More than two full rows of people rose immediately. The judge ruled the case a violent offense and sided with the prosecution to hold Jones without bond. The victim's family said they would like to decline comment at this time. Jones is expected to be back in court on April 27.
