Fatal crash sparks vegetation fire in North County
ESCONDIDO, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — Crews responded to a vegetation fire in North County Saturday after flames from a vehicle fire spread into nearby brush. According to officials with Cal Fire, the blaze was reported around 1 p.m. at 32111 Shirey Road in Escondido. Emergency crews initially responded to a vehicle fire that extended into surrounding vegetation, prompting a full response. Officials said crews were able to quickly contain the forward rate of spread, preventing the blaze from threatening nearby structures. No damage was reported other than one vehicle that was destroyed in the fire. Authorities later confirmed the incident stemmed from a single-vehicle traffic collision that turned fatal. The crash sparked a 100-by-100-foot vegetation fire. Deputies with the San Diego County Sheriff's Office responded alongside Cal Fire personnel. The cause of the crash remains under investigation. No further details were immediately released.
