Fatal crash on Southern California freeway leaves two people dead

This article has been updated with new details provided by the California Highway Patrol to KTLA. An accident occurred on the 60 Freeway in the Inland Empire early Monday morning, resulting in the tragic deaths of a man and a woman. The incident reportedly occurred around 4:50 a.m. on the eastbound side of the freeway near Country Village Road in Jurupa Valley. Although initial information was limited, it was confirmed that a SigAlert was issued as the investigation began, leading to only the westbound HOV lane being accessible. Authorities initiated a fatality investigation as the vehicle involved in the accident apparently veered off the freeway, landing in an industrial area off Wabash Drive. A bystander's photo captured the moment when the vehicle plunged off the freeway and collided with a parked truck in a parking lot. Despite one eastbound lane opening by 6:45 a.m., traffic was still moving slowly through the area. The SigAlert was lifted by 7:30 a.m., and by 10:30 a.m., more details on the crash were disclosed by Officer Javier Navarro of the California Highway Patrol. The crash involved a black Honda Civic with a female driver and a male passenger, both in their forties. The male passenger was thrown from the vehicle and tragically died in the eastbound lanes, while the female driver also lost her life in the crash after veering off the freeway. The cause of the accident is under investigation, as the CHP spokesperson noted that it remains unclear why the driver lost control.
