Fatal crash on Loop 202 leaves 3 dead
Over the weekend, a tragic fiery collision on an East Valley freeway resulted in the loss of three lives. The devastating incident occurred shortly after 2:30 a.m. on December 27 along the eastbound Red Mountain Loop 202 near McDowell Road. According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, emergency responders arrived at the scene to find a 2019 Kia Sorento and a 2003 Toyota Matrix engulfed in flames in the HOV lane. Following the extinguishing of the fire, the bodies of three individuals were discovered inside the burnt vehicles. Due to the intense fire, neither the victims nor the vehicles could be easily identified. Investigations suggest that one of the vehicles may have been traveling in the wrong direction before the collision. While the freeway was temporarily closed for investigation, it has since been reopened. The victims will be formally identified by the Maricopa County Medical Examiner's Office, as confirmed by the DPS.
