Fatal car accident involving intoxicated driver and cyclist in Carlsbad

A tragic incident occurred early Saturday morning on Carlsbad Boulevard, resulting in the death of a bicyclist following a collision with a vehicle, as reported by the Carlsbad Police Department. The police responded to the scene promptly and discovered the bicyclist had succumbed to the injuries sustained in the accident. Thanks to the assistance of the community, along with the use of license plate reader technology and a drone, law enforcement was able to locate the suspected driver close to the crash area. The driver, Alexander Gendron, 27, from Escondido, has been taken into custody on charges including leaving the scene of a collision resulting in injury or death, DUI causing injury or death, and vehicular manslaughter. The deceased bicyclist's identity will be disclosed by the San Diego County Medical Examiner at a later period. Alcohol is suspected to have been a contributing factor in the collision, which is still being looked into. For now, the northbound section of Carlsbad Boulevard, between Tamarack Avenue and Cannon Road, is closed while investigations continue. Authorities are urging any witnesses to come forward and assist in the ongoing investigation.
