Fatal 3-vehicle crash leaves 19-year-old Ohio college athlete dead

A University of Toledo track and field athlete died following a three-vehicle crash in Ohio last week. According to CBS affiliate KDKA, 19-year-old Eva Moran died May 29 in Marion County. Moran was a freshman pole vaulter and health sciences student at the university. Authorities said Moran was driving a Hyundai Elantra on State Route 309, when it crashed into a GMC Acadia that was waiting to turn left. Investigators said the impact pushed the Elantra into the opposite lane, where it was struck by a Jeep Grand Cherokee. Moran, who was from Caledonia, Ohio, was ejected from the vehicle. She later died at a local hospital. In a statement released by the university, Director of Cross Country and Track and Field Andrea Grove-McDonough said Moran’s “determination, character and positive spirit” made an impact on the program. “There are no words to adequately express the sadness our team feels over the loss of Eva,” Grove-McDonough said. During her freshman season, Moran finished 10th at the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships. While attending River Valley High School, Moran set the Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference pole vault record with a mark of 12 feet and one-half inch. Moran is survived by her parents, Alena and Derrek Moran, her brothers Maddox and Jaxton, and her sister Kya. According to her obituary, funeral and visitation services are scheduled for June 4. Her family asked guests attending the services to wear bright colors, including pink, orange and yellow, in honor of Moran’s personality.
