Family of man in fatal 2021 I-35 crash gets $44M
During the 2021 winter storm, a Dallas County jury found a Missouri trucking company and one of its drivers responsible for a fatal crash on Interstate 35 that claimed the life of 49-year-old Christopher Vardy. The jury awarded Vardy's family $44.1 million in total damages, citing inadequate winter weather driving training for the driver involved in the crash. This incident was one of 130 accidents that occurred on the southbound TEXpress section of the highway on the same day. The jury granted $24.1 million in compensatory damages and $20 million in punitive damages due to gross negligence. According to the Vardy family's attorneys, the tractor-trailer, driven by Steven Ridder, was traveling too fast for the weather conditions and collided with Vardy's vehicle, which was stationary due to prior accidents. The jury's careful consideration of evidence and subsequent verdict provided some solace and a sense of justice for the Vardy family in their tragic loss. Vardy was one of six individuals who lost their lives during the icy pileup involving 135 vehicles on I-35W. Amidst the hazardous weather conditions that led to this catastrophic event, it was revealed that the company tasked with maintaining the road where the crash occurred had not adequately addressed the icy roadway conditions. Reports indicated that speeding drivers were also a contributing factor to the fatal crash, with road sensors detecting average speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour in the left lane, despite a 75 mph speed limit. The winter storm of 2021 proved to be one of Texas' most severe weather-related disasters, resulting in numerous deaths and widespread power outages. The failure of power grids, coupled with frozen equipment at power plants and natural gas facilities, led to significant disruptions in electricity supply, leaving millions without power for several days.
