Family of Arvada crash victims remembers them as loving and full of life

DENVER (KDVR) — The family of an elderly couple killed in a car accident in Arvada earlier this year remembers them as kind and well loved by their community. Carl and Rosie Marcil were killed back on Valentine’s Day when their car was struck by another in the intersection of West Colfax and Youngfield Street. On Monday, family and friends gathered at their home to celebrate a life well lived. “As you can see behind us they had a lot of friends and a lot of stuff in the community," Larry Weese, the Marcil's nephew, said. Friends made through long lives of kindness and laughter, Larry says. To him, his uncle more than just an uncle. “He was like a father to me," Larry said. Carl was an Army veteran from the Vietnam War and Larry says he loved working on his 1948 Chevy truck as much as he loved his country. “He was a mechanic his whole life. He built everything on that truck," Larry said. For Rosie, she loved giving back. Larry says they once called the fire department for help after she hurt her head. She never forgot it. “From that day on, most days she would cook them dinner or cook them cake and candies and take them to the station," Larry said. Neither did the Arvada Fire Department, who showed up to meet the family and pay their respects on Monday. Larry’s wife, Michelle, says Rosie also loved holidays. “For Valentine’s Day they would drive all the way to Loveland so everybody’s card would be postmarked from Loveland, Colorado," Michelle said. Valentine’s Day, tragically, was the day of the accident. Afterwards, the Weeses spent six weeks spent in Colorado for the funeral and burial before returning home to Texas and were immediately reminded of Rosie's caring heart. “When we got home, her card was in the mailbox," Michelle said. The Weeses say they had a chance to talk to Rosie and Carl over the phone the day of the accident. They wish they had a heads up it would be the last time. “I would’ve stayed on the phone longer," Michelle said. As the community gathers to mourn the loss, they hope people take extra caution on the roads so no one has to gather like this for their own families. “It takes one second and you shatter people’s lives," Michelle said. The other driver, 25-year-old Damien Lee Sronce, was charged on Friday with two counts of vehicular manslaughter.
