Elk Grove crash: 2 killed, 2 injured after teens flee police in stolen car

(FOX40.COM) — Two people are dead and two others were injured early Monday morning in an Elk Grove car crash caused by three teens fleeing police in a stolen vehicle, the Elk Grove Police Department said. Around 4 a.m., an Elk Grove police officer parked at Rau Park heard what sounded like a vehicle driving recklessly. The officer then saw a silver Hyundai and activated his overhead lights in an attempt to conduct a traffic stop. However, the Hyundai fled and a chase ensued, Elk Grove police said. As the Hyundai approached a dead end on eastbound Brown Road, the rear passenger exited the car and fled on foot. At that time the officer then saw that person, along with the driver and front passenger, all wearing black balaclava masks, Elk Grove police said. The Hyundai then made a U-turn and accelerated westbound on Brown Road at a high speed. The vehicle ran a red light at the intersection of Elk Grove Florin Road and Brown Road, crashing broadside into a southbound Tesla with four occupants, Elk Grove police said. The two rear Tesla passengers, a 47-year-old woman and a 54-year-old man, were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, a 55-year-old woman, and the front passenger, a 63-year-old man, were taken to a local hospital. The driver sustained life-threatening injuries, while the front passenger sustained non-life-threatening injuries, Elk Grove police said. Officers later learned the Hyundai was an unreported stolen vehicle out of Sacramento. Its driver, a 14-year-old boy, and the 13-year-old passenger, were detained. The driver was taken to a local hospital for treatment. He will be charged with vehicle theft, two counts of vehicular manslaughter, and felony evasion, Elk Grove police said. The 13-year-old passenger was released to his parents after receiving medical treatment. The identity of the rear passenger who fled on foot is still unknown. The identities of the deceased will be released by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office pending notification of next of kin.
