Eatonton man, 85, dies after crash on Sparta Highway in Putman County, sheriff says
An 85-year-old man is dead after a crash on Sparta Highway in Putnam County on Sunday afternoon. Sheriff Howard Sills said the accident happened around 2:00 p.m. as a driver of a Kia Soul traveling east on the highway attempted to turn left onto Long Shoals Road, when a driver of an F-150, traveling in the opposite direction, struck the vehicle. The Kia driver, identified as Johnie Prothro of Eatonton, died at the scene. The driver of the F-150 was not injured, but the female passenger, who was not wearing a seatbelt, struck the windshield during the crash. She refused to be taken to the hospital, Sills said.
