Driver sought after deadly pedestrian collision, Fremont police say

(KRON) -- The Fremont Police Department said a pedestrian died after being struck twice Tuesday night. Police are looking for the second vehicle that did not stop after the crash. This incident marks Fremont’s fourth fatal traffic collision of the year. Fremont PD said officers responded at 8:32 p.m. to the crash involving a pedestrian and a Toyota Scion on Stevenson Boulevard, between Sundale Drive and Blacow Road. Police said officers, Fremont Fire Department personnel and emergency medics provided aid to the injured victim, who was found lying in the roadway. The victim, identified as 37-year-old Jesse Michael Katches, was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced deceased. The driver of the Toyota Scion stayed at the scene and is working with investigators, said Fremont police. However, there was a second vehicle involved that police are searching for. "The pedestrian attempted to cross midblock, amid heavy vehicle traffic coming from the north side of Stevenson Boulevard, moving southward," police said. "As the pedestrian entered the number two lane of westbound Stevenson Boulevard, a collision occurred with the Toyota Scion. The pedestrian fell to the ground in the number one lane of westbound Stevenson Boulevard, while the driver of the Toyota pulled over to the shoulder of the road. Shortly afterward, a second vehicle collided with the pedestrian. The second vehicle did not stop and continued westbound on Stevenson Boulevard." Police have not yet identified the second vehicle or its driver. The cause of the collision is under investigation.
