Driver sentenced to 25 years in prison for leading police on fatal Newport chase in 2020.
A man who was involved in a police pursuit in 2020 that resulted in a fatal crash in Newport, killing two innocent bystanders, has been sentenced to 25 years in prison according to a federal court ruling announced on Thursday. Mason Meyer, 32, was chased by Cincinnati police into Covington and then into Newport on August 7, 2020. The pursuit tragically ended in a crash that took the lives of 81-year-old Raymond Laible and his wife, 80-year-old Gayle Laible, who were sitting outside Press on Monmouth cafe at the time Meyer’s vehicle lost control and hit them. Two other bystanders sustained minor injuries in the incident. Meyer, along with 26-year-old Kirsten Johnson, who was also in the vehicle at the time, were found to have 50 grams or more of methamphetamine, two loaded handguns, and a loaded rifle during the pursuit. This incident was part of a larger firearms and narcotics conspiracy, with Meyer and Johnson among over a dozen individuals indicted by a grand jury. The leader of the organization, 36-year-old Ryan Haskamp, was sentenced to 27 years in prison earlier this year for his role in supplying guns and drugs to members of the ring. Law enforcement seized a large amount of drugs and weapons from the organization, highlighting the extent of the criminal operation. Other individuals convicted in connection with this case were also involved in trafficking activities across Cincinnati and other areas.
