Driver in fatal Las Vegas crash sentenced
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- The fate was decided for 24-year-old Raul Angel Castorena, the man responsible for a deadly, multi-car crash in the central Las Vegas valley. On Tuesday, Judge Bita Yeager sentenced Castorena to a minimum of two years in prison and a maximum of six, the toughest penalty under the law. In June, Castorena ran a red light at the intersection of Eastern and Stewart Avenues and t-boned Humberto Sanchez Aguero. Aguero, a father of two, was running a quick errand near his home when his car was hit. He later died at the hospital. Aguero’s wife, Ashley Perez-Sanchez, stood before Judge Yeager on Tuesday and made an emotional plea. “Your honor, I am not here asking you for revenge. I'm asking for accountability,” Perez-Sanchez said. Tuesday, dash camera footage of the crash was privately revealed to only the judge and the victim's family. The driver, Castorena, also stood before the judge and made his case. “I don't remember anything. I did suffer severe injuries. I was in the hospital for quite some time,” said Castorena. While pleading for a lighter sentence, Castorena’s attorney pointed out that Castorena did not have a previous criminal history. He also added that he had hopes to join the police force, and had an interview scheduled days before the crash. "He didn't even apologize. He didn't have no remorse," said Perez-Sanchez. Ultimately, Castorena was taken away in handcuffs following his sentencing. Perez-Sanchez told 8 News Now that she does feel justice following the sentencing. Castorena initially faced multiple charges, including reckless driving resulting in death, DUI resulting in death, and failure to obey a traffic control device. According to court documents, he was released on a $5,000 bail. Under a plea deal, he only pleaded guilty to reckless driving resulting in death or substantial bodily harm.
