Driver in custody after crashing into Gonzales transformer and McDonald's
A car crash caused a power outage for more than 600 PG&E customers in Gonzales Tuesday morning.According to the California Highway Patrol, a CHP officer conducted a traffic stop for a speeding driver of a black Honda Accord. The driver initially stopped south of 5th Street along the northbound lane of Highway 101 in Gonzales. The driver sped away shortly after stopping at more than 100 miles per hour. The Honda exited the highway at 5th Street, lost control and crashed into the entryway of the McDonald's. The car also crashed into a transformer there, knocking out power for 626 PG&E customers at 9:39 a.m. The power was later restored around 1:30 p.m."Speeding is one of the leading causes of crashes in California. When individuals speed on our roadways, it reduces their response time, their reaction time," CHP Lieutenant Kendra Charlesworth said.According to the California Department of Transportation, 28% of collisions were caused by speeding and aggressive driving between 2008 and 2017.The driver is in custody for evading a Highway Patrol officer. No injuries were reported."The Highway Patrol is committed to everyone's safety.
