Dog 'grievously injured' in crash involving erratic driver, police say
The Westbrook Police Department said a dog is receiving emergency treatment after it was severely injured in a crash Tuesday afternoon.Police said at about 2:20 p.m., dispatchers received a 911 call about a white pickup truck that was operating erratically on Spring Street, near the intersection of County Road.The 911 caller told dispatchers they saw the truck drive off the roadway and believed the driver either had a seizure or had overdosed. While the caller was speaking with dispatchers, the truck drove off.Officers in marked police cruisers found the truck traveling north on Spring Street and attempted to stop it for erratic operation.According to police, the driver of the truck did not stop, passed numerous vehicles and nearly collided head-on with a cruiser.The truck eventually crashed into the back of a semi-trailer and rolled over near 85 Spring St.The driver of the truck was evaluated at the scene by Westbrook Fire Rescue personnel and transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.Police said there was a small dog in the truck that was "grievously injured" in the crash. Officers rushed the dog to an emergency veterinary clinic for treatment.The Westbrook Police Department said it is investigating the crash with assistance from the Maine State Police.Police said more information, including the driver's name, any criminal charges and an update on the dog's condition, will be shared in the near future.The section of Spring Street between William Clarke Drive and Glenwood Avenue was shut down for about two hours as a result of the crash. Police said the roadway had reopened as of 4:36 p.m.
