Details revealed in fatal Carthage DUI collision
In Carthage, a tragic drunk driving crash has left one man deceased and a woman with severe injuries. Mark Mendez-Hernandez, a repeat DWI offender, has been charged with various crimes in connection to the incident, which occurred Tuesday afternoon at the intersection of Oak and McGregor. An elderly couple in an SUV was struck by Mendez-Hernandez's black pickup truck, causing a chain reaction involving another vehicle. The driver of the SUV, Gale Wade, 76, of Joplin, lost his life, and his wife was airlifted to a hospital in Springfield. Mendez-Hernandez attempted to flee but was pursued by citizens and apprehended by the police. The intersection was closed for several hours to facilitate investigation by the state crash reconstruction team.
