Details released in fatal backcountry crash involving motorcycle, semi truck
BORREGO SPRINGS, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — A motorcyclist was killed last weekend in a head-on collision with a semi-truck on State Route 78 near Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. According to California Highway Patrol, the crash happened around 10:15 a.m. when a 35-year-old man from El Centro was driving a 2016 Freightliner Cascadia westbound on SR-78. At the same time, a 67-year-old man from Redlands was riding a Norton Commando motorcycle eastbound on the highway. Investigators say the semi-truck veered into oncoming traffic and entered the eastbound lane, directly into the path of the motorcycle. For reasons still under investigation, the Freightliner ultimately collided head-on with the motorcycle and the rider was ejected upon impact. Meanwhile, the semi truck continued traveling westbound briefly before veering off the roadway and crashing into a rock embankment on the north shoulder. First responders attempted life-saving efforts on the motorcyclist but he was pronounced dead at the scene, CHP reported. The driver of the big rig only sustained minor injuries. Neither of their identities have been released at this time. Traffic on SR-78 was impacted for several hours as investigators documented the scene and crews cleared crash debris. Authorities said drugs and/or alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash. “Maintaining your lane is not just about following the rules, it is about safe driving,” said CHP Captain Monteagudo. “Stay centered, stay alert and stay focused. Let’s stay committed to protecting lives.” The investigation remains ongoing.
