Deputy from San Bernardino County arrested for fatal boat accident in Colorado River.
A sheriff deputy from San Bernardino County was arrested last Friday following a fatal boating accident on the Colorado River, during which he was reportedly intoxicated. The incident occurred near the Needles Bridge in Needles. The collision involved a 22-foot Cheetah deck boat, operated by Bruce Southworth, and an 18-foot Sanger vessel that had stalled. The crash resulted in serious injuries to Weston Stewart, a 38-year-old resident of La Verne, who later succumbed to his injuries in the hospital. The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department stated that alcohol was a likely contributing factor. Southworth, a deputy from Yucaipa, was arrested at the scene and charged with operating a watercraft negligently while intoxicated, causing harm. He has been placed on administrative leave. The investigation is ongoing, and updates will be provided to the District Attorney's Office. It remains uncertain if there were other injuries in the accident. Southworth had previously been recognized for his bravery in 2015. For more information, individuals are urged to contact the SBSD.
