Deadly DUI crash in Collier County kills motorcyclist and injures others
A deadly DUI crash involving three motorcycles and a pickup truck on eastbound US-41 near Cays Drive in Collier County killed one motorcyclist and injured others, prompting an ongoing investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol. James Craig was caught in the heavy traffic and detours caused by the crash. "We were there for about 45 minutes, and then it was about a 65-mile detour for us. So, it was about an hour and a half, two hours," Craig said. Florida Highway Patrol said Marshall Franklin Jenkins of Naples was driving drunk in his pickup truck on U.S. 41 around noon Saturday. Troopers said Jenkins crossed the center line into oncoming traffic, crashing into a motorcyclist, sending them flying off their bike and killing them. Henry Grau, another Collier County resident, reflected on the consequences of drinking and driving. "I'm sure they didn't, you know, go out with that intention, obviously, you know, drinking and whatnot. Like, you kind of know the consequences. So, you got to be ready for that. But I'm always on edge when I'm driving," Grau said. The impact of the crash sent the motorcycle into another biker on the road. Florida Highway Patrol said debris from the crash also hit two other motorcyclists, all of whom walked away with minor injuries. Another motorcycle collided with the original motorcyclist, who was hit by Jenkins. Craig emphasized the importance of staying alert on the road. "The best you can do is just kind of pay attention, be aware of what's going on. But if somebody is doing the wrong thing at the wrong time, that's what makes accidents happen, unfortunately," Craig said. The crash remains under investigation.DOWNLOAD the free Gulf Coast News app for your latest news and alerts on breaking news, weather, sports, entertainment, and more on your phone or tablet.
