Deadly crash in northern Nigeria claims lives of 22 athletes after sports event

In Nigeria's northern state of Kano, a tragic incident occurred where a bus carrying athletes returning from a sports festival veered off a bridge, resulting in the loss of at least 22 lives and injuries to several passengers. The cause of the accident, which happened over the weekend, remains unknown. The athletes had participated in the Nigerian National Sports Festival in the southern state of Ogun before the unfortunate event took place. The bus, carrying more than 30 passengers, including athletes, coaches, and officials, reportedly lost control and fell off the Chiromawa Bridge on the Kano-Zaria expressway. The survivors were promptly taken to a nearby hospital for medical attention. The governor of Kano declared a day of mourning for the state, offering support to the families of the victims in the form of 1 million naira (approximately $630) and food supplies. This incident is a reminder of the frequent road accidents in Nigeria, often attributed to poor road conditions and inadequate enforcement of traffic regulations.
