Crash on El Monte Road claims life of 71-year-old man from Lakeside

LAKESIDE, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) -- A man from Lakeside died on Thursday morning after his vehicle crashed into a tree near El Monte Road, according to the California Highway Patrol. According to CHP, the man was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision. At around 11:08 a.m. on Thursday, the 71-year-old was reportedly driving a 2008 Toyota Avalon westbound on El Monte Road, east of Mile Post Marker 5. For reasons still under investigation, the Toyota reportedly veered off the north roadway and struck a tree. The man succumbed to his injuries and died at the scene, according to CHP. The investigation is ongoing, and CHP says it's unknown at this time whether drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash. “Safe roadway navigation requires constant attention and responsible driving decisions,” said Captain Monteagudo. “Reduce your speed on curves and turns, remain focused behind the wheel, always wear a seatbelt, and drive according to roadway and traffic conditions.”
