Covington woman taken into custody for fatal collision with 8-year-old girl

Louisiana State Police have apprehended a woman in connection with a tragic accident in St. Tammany Parish where an eight-year-old child lost their life. Candace L. Leblanc, 39, from Covington, was taken into custody after a test indicated the presence of impairing substances in her bloodstream when the accident occurred. Leblanc faces multiple charges including vehicular homicide, failure to use child restraints, transporting alcoholic beverages in a vehicle, driving without a license, and reckless driving. As per the Louisiana State Police, on September 16, Jewel Leger, 8, from Covington, was a passenger in a vehicle traveling on LA Hwy 40, near Hurd Road. Initial findings show that the vehicle was heading west on LA Hwy 40 and veered off the road to the right, colliding with a tree at a left curve for reasons that are still being investigated. Reportedly, Leger was in the front passenger seat without a seatbelt and tragically succumbed to the injuries sustained in the crash. The investigation is ongoing.
