Court appearance and bond set for West Allis man in deadly Milwaukee accident
A 21-year-old man from West Allis appeared in court for the first time on Tuesday, January 13, accused of causing a fatal crash in Milwaukee's south side. Drake Wallis faces charges of second-degree reckless homicide and driving with a suspended license, resulting in death. The incident, which occurred near 76th and Morgan, led to the death of 29-year-old D'Monte Owens, a newlywed and father. While Wallis was allegedly driving at 62 miles per hour in a 35 mile per hour zone at the time of the crash, he did not brake or swerve before impact according to prosecutors. Wallis has had previous speeding infractions, including an incident in 2024 where he was caught driving 60 miles per hour above the speed limit. The defense claimed that the victim turned left in front of Wallis right before the crash, but the court commissioner questioned this assertion during the hearing. Wallis was granted a $30,000 bail, instructed not to drive during the trial, and is scheduled to appear in court again next week.
