CHP: Fatal San Mateo-Hayward bridge crash blamed on distracted driver

According to the California Highway Patrol, a fatal accident on the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge occurred due to distracted driving. The crash occurred on the westbound side of the bridge near the midpoint around 3 p.m. on Tuesday, leading to a temporary closure of all westbound lanes. The driver of a utility van, identified by branding from Rooter Hero plumbing, was reported to have been looking at their phone when they encountered a stalled Kia sedan. The van driver's distraction caused them to collide with the sedan after attempting to swerve. Sadly, the Kia driver passed away at the scene, while a van passenger sustained severe injuries and was transported to Stanford Hospital. The CHP confirmed that alcohol or drugs were not factors in the incident, and it was uncertain whether charges would be filed against the van driver. The investigation was still in progress, and the identity of the deceased individual was being withheld until their family was notified by the San Mateo County Coroner's Office.
