Chico police release name of person killed in May 27 multi-vehicle crash
The Chico Police Department (CPD) has released the name of the person who died during the fatal six-vehicle accident in Chico on May 27, 2026. The crash occurred around 1 p.m. at East Lassen Avenue and Esplanade and started when a driver reportedly ran a red light at high speed and slammed into a stopped vehicle. Two people were inside the vehicle that was first hit. The passenger of the vehicle that was initially stuck died during the collision. CPD has identified the passenger as Tawney Christner, 63, of Clearlake Oaks. Firefighters quickly arrived at the scene; however, Christner is believed to have died at the scene.
