Champaign County reports 13 deadly accidents in 2025; board asks for input on prevention strategy

The Champaign County Regional Planning Commission in Urbana, Illinois is seeking the community's input on reducing traffic fatalities given the alarming statistics showing the highest number of fatalities the county has seen in two decades so far in 2025. Within the last six months alone, 13 lives were lost in crashes in the county, prompting the commission to seek new strategies to reach zero traffic crash fatalities. Rita Morocoima-Black, the Planning and Community Development Director of the commission, stressed the need for proactive community involvement in identifying solutions such as changes to intersection designs, enhanced enforcement on certain streets, and educational programs for pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists. Residents are encouraged to participate by providing feedback on dangerous intersections, road improvements, and other safety-related suggestions through an online safety survey and comments map, which are accessible until the end of August. Additional input can be shared via email, regular mail, or phone, as the commission aims for a collaborative effort to enhance road safety for everyone in the community.
