California girls’ hockey team triumphs in championship shortly after tragic I-70 accident

Shortly after a tragic accident on Interstate 70 that resulted in the loss of their driver and injuries to several members, a California youth hockey team displayed resilience on the ice and triumphed in a championship tournament before heading home. The SC Lady Flyers were on their way to a competition in Colorado when their van was hit by a snowplow and veered off the road. The driver, Manny Lorenzana, who was also a parent to one of the players, tragically did not survive the crash. Coach Todd Stelnick shared that Lorenzana had a significant impact on the team and took pride in his daughter's progress as a hockey player. Despite the emotional aftermath of the accident, the team, led by their captain Sophia Boyle, decided to honor Lorenzana's memory and continue with the tournament. They dedicated their wins to him and each other, culminating in a championship victory achieved through determination and teamwork. While the championship victory was celebrated, the coach emphasized that the team's unity and spirit were their primary focus. The team has received immense support from the hockey community in Colorado and beyond, which has aided in their healing process. As most of the team has returned home, efforts are being made to support Lorenzana's family through a GoFundMe page established for funeral expenses and ongoing assistance. Contributions and words of encouragement from the public have been a source of comfort during this difficult time.
