Boeing to pay over $28 million to family of 737 MAX crash victim
In a recent ruling, a federal court jury in Chicago ordered Boeing to pay over $28 million to the family of a United Nations worker who tragically lost her life in the 2019 crash of a 737 MAX jet in Ethiopia. This is the first verdict among the many lawsuits filed following the Ethiopia and Indonesia crashes that resulted in the loss of 346 lives. The agreement reached on Wednesday morning states that the family of Shikha Garg will receive $35.85 million, including the full verdict amount and 26% interest, with Boeing committing to not appeal. Boeing expressed deep regret to all those affected by the crashes and acknowledged the families' right to seek justice through legal trials. This verdict is seen as a form of accountability for Boeing's actions, as Shikha Garg's family argued that the 737 MAX was defectively designed and Boeing neglected to warn about its potential risks. The company has settled a significant majority of the related lawsuits, compensating victims' families through various means. In a previous agreement, Boeing resolved three lawsuits brought by families affected by the Ethiopian Airlines crash, the terms of which were not disclosed.
