Boat Captain Convicted for Speedboat Crash that Claimed Life of U.S. Executive, According to Attorney

The captain of a motorboat involved in a fatal crash off Italy's Amalfi coast, resulting in the death of a U.S. tourist, has been sentenced to over four years in prison for manslaughter, as confirmed by his lawyer on Friday. The victim, Adrienne Vaughan, 45, who was the head of the U.S. branch of Bloomsbury publishing house, lost her life after being thrown from the motorboat during the incident in August 2023. The Italian skipper, Elio Persico, 32, received a jail term of four years and nine months following his plea bargain, after it was found that he was under the influence of cocaine and alcohol at the time of the crash. The tragic accident also resulted in injuries to Vaughan's daughter, and the sailboat onboard which was carrying party-goers. The collision occurred off the coast near a popular tourist spot, and the victim was pronounced dead despite rescue efforts. This incident deeply saddened the literary community, where Vaughan was celebrated for her leadership and dedication to authors and readers.
