Arrest made in fatal hit-and-run in East El Paso
EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) - An arrest has been made in connection with a fatal hit-and-run crash that claimed the life of a 76-year-old El Paso man. El Paso police announced that they arrested 21-year-old Abraham Sosa Castro, of Fabens, on Tuesday, July 7, charging him with collision involving death. He was booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility. His bond was set at $500,000 by Judge Joseph. The crash occurred around 11:30 p.m. on June 18 along Loop 375 South near Pelicano Drive. According to authorities, officers responded to the scene and found two vehicles involved in the collision. Investigators said the driver of a 2023 Cadillac CT4 fled the scene on foot before officers arrived. The driver of a 2019 Nissan Sentra, Manuel Oliva Contreras, of East El Paso, was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. However, police were later notified that Contreras died at the hospital later that morning. The department's Special Traffic Investigations Unit took over the case. Preliminary findings indicate the Cadillac was traveling southbound on Loop 375 at a high rate of speed when it rear-ended the Nissan Sentra, which was also traveling southbound. The fatal crash marks El Paso's 22nd traffic fatality of 2026, compared with 29 traffic fatalities reported during the same period in 2025.
