Alton teen girl and Pontoon Beach woman killed in Pontoon Beach crash, police say
PONTOON BEACH — A 17-year-old Alton girl and a 32-year-old Pontoon Beach woman were killed in a two-vehicle crash late Saturday evening. LaTraya N. Hughes, 17, of Alton, and Janecia N. Gardner, 32, of Pontoon Beach, were passengers in two different cars that collided just north of the 2100 block of Illinois 111 in Pontoon Beach, according to the Madison County Coroner’s Office. The two drivers were treated at the scene and taken to area hospitals, and their conditions were unknown. The accident occurred at about 11:27 p.m. on Saturday. Both women were pronounced dead at the scene. Autopsies were conducted, and routine toxicology results are pending. At the request of the Pontoon Beach Police Department, the Illinois State Police Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit was called to the scene to assist in determining the cause of the crash. The case remains under investigation by the Pontoon Beach Police Department, Illinois State Police Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit, and the Madison County Coroner’s Office. Funeral arrangements for Gardner remain pending with Officer Funeral Home in East St. Louis, and arrangements for Hughes remain pending with Harrison Funeral Home in Alton, Illinois.
