9-year-old killed, teen injured in dirt bike crash involving FedEx truck in Fort Pierce

UPDATE: A 9-year-old boy died and a 13-year-old was injured after a dirt bike collided with a FedEx box truck Monday afternoon in St. Lucie County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. The crash happened around 3:07 p.m. on East Midway Road near the driveway of 606 E. Midway Road in Fort Pierce. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a ProTaper dirt bike carrying two children was traveling eastbound on the north-side sidewalk when it approached the driveway. Troopers said a FedEx box truck was traveling southbound out of the driveway and had stopped on the sidewalk when the front of the dirt bike struck the truck’s front right bumper. The 9-year-old boy who was operating the dirt bike was taken to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital, where he later died, according to FHP. A 13-year-old boy riding as a passenger on the dirt bike was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, troopers said. The driver of the FedEx truck, a 53-year-old man, was not injured. A CBS12 News crew at the scene witnessed a FedEx truck and a red dirt bike being towed away from the residential area. She says she has seen children, sometimes without supervision playing along the road. "Look both ways before you cross the street," Sharma said. "Be wary of other vehicles. It's a very dangerous highway. Midway Road is a busy road." The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. Troopers have not announced whether any charges are expected, and the agency has not released additional information about what led up to the collision. The investigation remains active.
