60-year-old woman dies in rare bike path crash in Davis

(FOX40.COM) — A woman died on Monday afternoon in a collision between two bicyclists on a greenbelt bike path in Davis. According to the Davis Police Department, the crash occurred on a section of the greenbelt near Covell Boulevard and Catalina Drive, where police tape blocked off the area as investigators worked the scene. “This collision actually occurred between two bicyclists, and it was actually on a bike path — on a bike path in the greenbelt,” Lt. Jon Evans, a public information officer for the department, said. The Yolo County Coroner's office identified the woman who died as Julie Veress, 60. Police said the other rider involved was a 16-year-old boy riding an electric bicycle. Davis police said the minor was treated for minor injuries. Coworkers confirmed to FOX40 that Veress worked at Sutter Davis Hospital. In a statement, Sutter Health reported that the organization was “heartbroken by the loss of a valued member of our team” and extended condolences to her family, loved ones and colleagues." While bicycle crashes are not uncommon in the city, Evans said fatal outcomes on bike paths are rare. At this time, the investigation remains active as crews work to learn more.
