58-year-old woman killed in hit-and-run crash while walking to work on Indy’s northside side
INDIANAPOLIS -- A 58-year-old woman is dead following a hit-and-run on Indy's northeast side. The victim's family believes she was walking to work when she was hit by a driver along a wooded stretch of German Church Road. In the middle of the afternoon, around 2:45 p.m. on Monday, police were called to the scene just north of 42nd where a woman was found dead on the side of the street. Police believe 58-year-old Annie Torres was hit by someone driving south, but that driver didn't stay on scene or report the crash. Her family just hopes the driver who left the scene is held accountable. "You know we didn't think this would happen to us. This is a surreal event," said the victim's niece Stephanie Karwick. Stephanie didn’t want to be on camera, but her aunt worked at a Walmart on Pendleton Pike. On Monday, a coworker told the family Torres didn't show up for work. "So we went the route she would take and went to look for her," said the victim's sister, Theresa Torres. While the family quickly filed a missing person report, Theresa says her sister often walked to work, so she began checking her path. Unfortunately, a short time later, Theresa told police she found her sister's lifeless body, which may have been in the ditch for several hours before being discovered. "When I saw her lying there, I was trying to make sense of what I was seeing," said Theresa. "And I saw her face and that's when I knew for sure." Annie is described as sassy and quick-witted. She was the oldest of six siblings. The victim's coworkers at Walmart put up a display in her honor because she worked at the store for more than a decade. The area along German Church where the crash took place does not have any sidewalks and is not very pedestrian-friendly. Still, Annie’s family says she often wore a headlamp to make herself visible to traffic when it was dark out. "She generally did her part to make sure she was as safe as she could be," said Theresa. A day later, police haven't released any information about the suspect's vehicle. The Torres family just wishes the driver responsible would either turn themselves in or someone else does it for them. "I just want them to realize if they were in the same situation, they would want somebody to step up and hold them accountable for what they did," said Stephanie. "Have some respect. Have some decency," said Theresa. "I hope that the human side of them will help them step up and have some accountability." No arrests have been made. Anyone with information on the case can still contact either IMPD or Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS.
