4 dead after car crashes into Waterbury building causing partial collapse

WATERBURY, Conn. (WTNH) — Four people from Waterbury are dead after a car crashed into a building early Thursday morning in Waterbury, police said. Authorities said it happened around 12:45 a.m. when police responded to a BMW sedan that had collided with the Hernandez Market on the corner of Cherry and Maple streets. Three people were pronounced dead at the scene. A fourth person was taken to the hospital, where they later died, police said. Police identified them as Kayden Torres, 20, Nelson Torres, 25, Noel Torres, 15—three brothers—and Jonathan Puszka, 20. They were all from Waterbury, police said. Waterbury Police Chief Fernando Spagnolo said speed "certainly" played a role in the crash. The car was traveling northbound on Baldwin Street when it crossed the intersection at East Main Street, where the driver lost control and crashed into the building. Police have not yet said who was driving the car. No one was inside the bodega when it was struck, authorities said. As of 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Cherry Street remained closed to traffic from East Main Street to Walnut Avenue. The Waterbury Police Department’s Crash Reconstruction Unit (CRU) is actively investigating this incident. Anyone with information is asked to call (203) 346-3975. Spagnolo gave an update on the crash around 7 a.m. Thursday. Watch below. This is a developing story. Check back with News 8 for updates.
