2 people killed in Wright County crash, Iowa State Patrol says
The Iowa State Patrol says two people are dead following a crash in Wright County Friday night. Authorities say the crash happened at 7:30 p.m. on Friday near the intersection of Highway 69 and 200th Street, just south of Belmond. According to an Iowa State Patrol report, a vehicle driving southbound made an illegal U-turn and hit another vehicle also going southbound. Authorities say 65-year-old Michael Mickelson and 71-year-old Ellen Countryman, both of Belmond, were the two people in the vehicle that made the U-turn. Both died at the scene. The report does not say if the person in the other vehicle was hurt. That is 14 more than the number recorded at the same point in 2025. Over the last five years, an average of 337 people have been killed in statewide crashes annually.
