2 dead after car crashes while fleeing North Carolina deputy, officials say
DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) -- A car fleeing a Durham County Sheriff's Office deputy crashed with at least two dead on North Roxboro Street/U.S. 501 just north of Durham Sunday evening, officials said. The crash was reported around 6:30 p.m. along North Roxboro Street near the Eno River and Latta/Infinity Road, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol said. The wreck involved at least one person ejected from a vehicle, the highway patrol said. Meanwhile, the Durham Police Department announced they have closed North Roxboro Street between Latta Road and Rippling Stream Road. The Durham County Sheriff's Office said that just before 6:30 p.m., they received a call about occupants of two vehicles firing gunshots in the area of the 8200 block of Ball Road. "A short time later, a patrol deputy travelling north on Roxboro Street toward the reported call witnessed the vehicles involved travelling southbound. As the deputy turned around to attempt a traffic stop, the vehicles sped off," a Durham County Sheriff's Office news release said. The deputy was trying to find both cars when the deputy spotted one of the cars that had crashed near Roxboro Street and Latta Road. Images from the scene showed a wrecked car split into two large pieces. "The crash, which resulted in multiple fatalities, is under investigation. The second vehicle has not been located at this time," deputies said. North Carolina troopers are at the scene of the crash, but officials are not sure if the agency will be investigating the wreck.
