17-year-old killed in DC scooter crash

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) -- A teenager was killed in a crash between a motor scooter and a sport-utility vehicle on Sunday, the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) said. MPD officers responded to the intersection of Malcolm X Avenue and Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue in Southeast just before 3:30 p.m. for a reported crash. Responding officers found 17-year-old Demetrius Stuckey of Southeast, D.C., in the road with serious injuries. DC Fire and EMS responded and took him to the hospital, where he died. Police believe that Stuckey was riding a scooter without a helmet, heading northeast in the 2900 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Ave. SE when an SUV was driving in the same direction. The car had slowed down to park along the right curb when Stuckey tried to pass on the passenger side. MPD said that's when he crashed into the passenger side mirror, causing him to fall off the scooter. The scooter continued forward and crashed into the back of a parked vehicle. According to police, the SUV's driver was not injured and stayed on the scene. Anyone with any information is asked to call 202-727-9099 or text 50411.
