$14M lawsuit filed against Costco after California shopper sustains 'permanent' injury in store incident

A woman from California has taken legal action against Costco, claiming that her severe injuries resulted from a liquor cabinet falling on her during a shopping trip. Sadie Novotny of Santa Rosa lodged a lawsuit against the retail giant for $14 million in damages, citing negligence on the store's part. The incident, which occurred on March 22 at a local Costco store, saw Novotny shopping with her husband when a display cabinet suddenly collapsed on her. According to the lawsuit, Novotny experienced injuries to her right shoulder, forearm, hand, fingers, and lower back. The complaint alleges that the liquor cabinet's instability and precarious placement caused the accident, pointing towards a lack of proper securing or staff training in safety protocols by Costco. Novotny insists that she suffered permanent and catastrophic injuries, including a traumatic brain injury, and is seeking a total of $14.11 million in damages. The lawsuit details claims for various types of compensation including emotional distress, pain and suffering, future medical expenses, and loss of earnings, attributing the incident to negligence in store management and employee supervision.
