Yuba City driver arrested in fatal big rig crash in SoCal; crash attracts DHS scrutiny

A truck driver from Yuba City has been arrested following an eight-vehicle crash that resulted in three fatalities and numerous injuries on a freeway in Southern California this week. The incident occurred on Tuesday on Interstate 10 in Ontario, where the driver of a big rig failed to decelerate, causing a series of collisions involving additional big rigs, pick-up trucks, and cars. The California Highway Patrol reported the crash, which involved a driver believed to be in the country unlawfully. The 21-year-old, Jashanpreet Singh, is currently in police custody without bail on charges of intoxicated vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence, as stated in a press release from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Authorities have issued an arrest detainer against Singh, who crossed the southern border illegally in 2022 and was reportedly released into the U.S. under the current administration. Tricia McLaughlin, assistant secretary of DHS, decried the incident as a tragic consequence of permissive immigration policies, emphasizing the dangers posed by undocumented individuals operating large vehicles on American roadways.
