Young California police officer dies as she assists at crash scene and is struck by vehicle
A tragic incident on a San Diego freeway resulted in the death of a 25-year-old police officer, Lauren Craven, who had stopped to aid a motorist in an overturned vehicle. While returning from duty, Officer Craven encountered the accident on Interstate 8 and was struck by another driver while trying to assist. Both Craven and the driver of the overturned vehicle lost their lives in the heartbreaking event. With just a year and a half of service in the La Mesa Police Department, Officer Craven was distinguished by her commitment to helping others, a dedication she displayed in her final moments. This marks the first line-of-duty death in the department's history, according to La Mesa Police Lt. Travis Higgins, who noted that Officer Craven's actions illustrated her selfless service for the community. In honor of Officer Craven's sacrifice, flags at the California Capitol were flown at half-staff by Governor Gavin Newsom, who expressed his and Jennifer's heartfelt sympathy for the loss and recognized Craven's unwavering service to her community.
