Yazoo County mother relieved after arrest made in son’s fatal crash

HOLMES COUNTY, Miss. (WJTV) - A Yazoo County family continues their fight for justice after a man accused of leaving the scene of a deadly crash was ordered to remain in custody. Holmes County Sheriff Willie March confirmed that Radarius Smith faces charges connected to an August 2025 crash that claimed the life of Dwain Pelison, Jr. Following a hearing on May 22, 2026, Smith’s bond was increased, and he remains in custody ahead of trial. For Pelison’s mother, Tammy Hudson, the court’s decision brought a measure of peace after months of grief and uncertainty. “You have to give account for what you’ve done,” Hudson said. “Because no matter what nobody says or does, God sits high and looks low.” Loved ones remember Pelison as a caring man who enjoyed spending time with family and giving back to others. Hudson described her son as someone who never met a stranger and always carried a love for life. “He had a big heart,” Hudson said. “He loved fishing, hunting with his dad, shooting pool, and driving 18-wheelers. He also loved being a police officer.” Hudson said the pain of losing her son remains overwhelming, especially during quiet moments at home where memories of him are everywhere. While Hudson has found forgiveness, she admits the hardest part has been watching Pelison’s daughter grow up without her father. The family said they hope the upcoming trial will provide accountability and closure as they continue honoring Pelison’s memory. Smith is expected to stand trial on October 16, 2026.
