Woman seriously injured in head-on crash involving school bus on Route 302

A Maine woman has been hospitalized with serious injuries after the SUV she was driving collided with a school bus on Route 302 near the Westbrook-Windham line, according to police.The Westbrook Police Department said officers and Westbrook firefighters responded to the crash on Bridgton Road, which is part of Route 302, shortly after 8:30 a.m. Thursday.A witness told police that a 2014 Subaru Crosstrek that was traveling east crossed the center line of the road and crashed head-on into a Windham Raymond School District (RSU 14) bus that was traveling west.The driver and sole occupant of the Subaru, a 25-year-old woman from Raymond, had to be freed from the vehicle by firefighters. Police said the woman was transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland with serious injuries.The driver and sole occupant of the school bus, a 72-year-old man from Raymond, was also transported to the hospital as a precaution, according to police. A witness told Maine's Total Coverage they saw the school bus driver being taken away on a stretcher.Cameron Lobley of Maine's Total Coverage went to the crash scene and saw that both vehicles sustained major front-end damage.Members of the Westbrook Police Department, Windham Police Department and Maine State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division responded to the scene to investigate and reconstruct the crash. The bus was towed from the scene shortly after 12 p.m. and the SUV had already been removed from the scene by that time. RSU 14 Superintendent of Schools Christopher Howell said the bus was heading from a vocational center in Westbrook to the school district's transportation center when the crash happened."That bus is totaled," Howell said. "The whole front of it is pushed in. The whole front axle is pushed in. That's not a bus that's going to see the road again."Lobley said the bus had one of its front wheels ripped off.The road was closed for hours between Duck Pond Road/Hardy Road in Westbrook into Windham. The Duck Pond Road intersection is where the famous Hawke's Plaza sign is, as well as the Duck Pond Variety store.Lobley said the closed section of Route 302 was reopened to traffic at about 12:40 p.m.
