Woman sentenced to 10 years for deadly DWI crash in Las Cruces
In Las Cruces, a 27-year-old woman has been given a 10-year prison sentence for her involvement in a deadly DWI collision that took the life of a bicyclist. The District Attorney's Office initially sought a 15-year term for Emily Elizabeth Portillo, stressing the importance of responsibility in cases involving impaired driving. Portillo ultimately received a 10-year sentence, with seven years to be served in custody and three years suspended. The accident, which occurred in February 2024, saw Roy Parra passing over I-25 on a bicycle when he was struck by Portillo's vehicle. Tragically, Parra succumbed to his injuries two days later. The District Attorney's Office highlighted the role of speeding and intoxication in the crash. They emphasized the far-reaching consequences of driving under the influence, citing the need for public awareness and accountability. Statements from both Parra's and Portillo's families were presented in court, underscoring the devastating impact of impaired driving. District Attorney Fernando Macias emphasized the office's commitment to prosecuting and imprisoning impaired drivers who cause fatal accidents, reiterating the seriousness of the issue in New Mexico.
