Woman rescued from ravine in Peoria after car accident

PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) -- A woman was taken to the hospital after her vehicle was found down a ravine in Peoria. Just before 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 12, crews with the Peoria Fire Department went to the area of North Prospect Road and North Montclair Avenue after hearing that a car was in a ravine, said Battalion Chief Rick Waldron. When firefighters and paramedics arrived on scene, they found one mid-sized sedan approximately 50 feet down the ravine on the east side of Prospect with heavy damage. Waldron said they found the car upright and empty with the passenger door open. They then found a woman who was another 30 feet down the ravine with multiple injuries but in stable condition. Crews began treating the woman while others set up a series of ropes to haul her up the steep incline. After the woman was immobilized on a spine board and secured to a stokes basket, she was pulled to the top of the ravine and taken to the hospital. The woman's injuries are believed to be non-life-threatening. The battalion chief said it is unknown how the incident happened. There was only one car involved.
