Woman dead, five suspects arrested after fatal crash in north St. Louis

ST. LOUIS - A woman is dead and five people are in custody Sunday night following a deadly crash in north St. Louis that stemmed from an armed carjacking. The incident occurred during a police chase in north St. Louis, with the crash happening at the intersection of Union and Natural Bridge. Five suspects, including two adults and three teens, are now in custody. According to police, a group of five suspects, armed with guns, carjacked a woman driving a Nissan around 8:30 p.m. Sunday night on the 700 block of Belt near Enright Avenue in the Sherman Park neighborhood. Roughly 20 minutes later, officers with the Real Time Crime Center spotted the stolen Nissan at Natural Bridge and Goodfellow. When a Mobile Reserve officer attempted to stop the stolen vehicle, it sped off. Moments later, the Nissan crashed into a red Hyundai at the intersection of Natural Bridge and Union. The woman driving the Hyundai was killed at the scene. The five people in the stolen vehicle, two adults and three juveniles, tried to flee but were quickly taken into custody, police said. Inside the stolen vehicle, police recovered guns and one fake weapon. "Both times this vehicle was seen by a Real Time Crime Center, they were driving erratically, irresponsibly, posing a danger to the community," said Major Janice Bockstruck, SLMPD Deputy Commander of Professional Standards. All five suspects were taken to hospitals with minor injuries. The investigation is being handled by the Force Investigations Unit, Accident Reconstruction, and District Six detectives. The name of the woman killed has not been released, and the investigation into the tragic incident continues as authorities piece together the events leading up to the crash.
