Woman confesses to causing deadly Amish carriage accident while under the influence of meth
A woman admitted in court on Friday that she was responsible for driving – not her twin sister – and crashing into an Amish buggy in southern Minnesota almost two years ago. Samantha Petersen, aged 37, formally pleaded guilty to charges of criminal vehicular homicide and criminal vehicular operation causing severe bodily harm while under the influence of drugs. The incident, which occurred on Sept. 25, 2023, in Fillmore County, resulted in the death of two children and injuries to others. Petersen expressed regret for driving under the influence of methamphetamine and causing the tragic accident. Her defense attorneys are proposing a sentence of one year in prison followed by five and a half years of probation, while prosecutors are seeking a four-year prison term. Petersen's sentencing is set for Sept. 29, 2025. Additionally, her twin sister, Sarah Petersen, also faced charges related to the crash after initially attempting to take blame for the incident. Sarah Petersen pleaded guilty earlier this year to aiding and abetting criminal vehicular operation causing severe bodily harm and was sentenced to 90 days in jail, followed by 120 days of home monitoring and four years of probation.
