Woman arrested, charged with DWI after fatal auto-ped crash over the weekend

AUSTIN (KXAN) -- A woman was arrested and charged in connection with a crash over the weekend that left one person dead. The crash happened around 8:12 p.m. in the 8700 block of Menchaca Road, near Davis Lane. According to the Austin Police Department, an unidentified male was hit and killed by a vehicle in the area. APD's watch command told KXAN on Saturday that a person had been taken into custody, but did not have further details that night. Police issued a press release Monday sharing more details. The driver of the vehicle was identified as Anissa Zapata, 23. She was arrested and charged with Accident Involving Death and Driving While Intoxicated, according to APD. There was not attorney information listed for her online, but when there is, KXAN will reach out to request a comment on the charges. According to an arrest affidavit, Zapata was driving northbound on Menchaca when her vehicle hit a pedestrian who was crossing the street in an area that did not have a crosswalk. Zapata did not stop or check on the pedestrian afterward, according to the affidavit, but she later returned to the scene in her boyfriend's vehicle, where an officer conducted sobriety tests. The affidavit stated that an officer asked Zapata why she did not stop to check on the pedestrian, and she said she needed to go home and call someone. She was ultimately placed under arrest and booked into the Travis County Jail This incident is being investigated as Austin’s 20th fatal crash of 2025, resulting in 24 fatalities. The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with any information should contact APD's Vehicular Homicide unit at 512-974-8111.
